Hike, bike and enjoy breathtaking views

Golden Gate National Recreation Area is famous for its iconic structures, the largest collection of historic buildings in any national park and the 146 kilometers of San Francisco Bay and Pacific Ocean shoreline that gives a home to some of the 2,458 plants and animal species in the urban park. Visitors can learn about 200 years of history, join a guided tour, or take advantage of recreational and educational programs about marine and animal life that are offered by a number of partner organizations. Go on a horseback ride, try hang gliding or learn about migrating birds of prey.

Located in the bustling city of San Francisco, California, Golden Gate National Recreation Area is home to one of the most iconic structures in the United States: the Golden Gate Bridge. It’s the beautiful bay views, ample hiking trails and the fog-shrouded, rugged coastline that make this park a breath of fresh air in the big city.

About 18 million people flock to this park to see the Golden Gate Bridge year, and it’s easy to see why. This dazzling reddish-orange suspension bridge, which spans the entrance to the San Francisco Bay from the Pacific Ocean, is a true engineering marvel. Many of the park’s hiking and biking trails offer scenic overlooks, like local favorite Hawk Hill, where you can get incredible views (and photos) of the bridge. Save time for Golden Gate Recreational Area’s other beautiful places: Take a hike among towering redwood trees in Muir Woods, stroll along the bay at Crissy Field and take a ferry to visit the historic Alcatraz prison.
