Set on the banks of the Red River, Fargo, North Dakota, offers Canadian visitors a perfect mini vacation.
The area is only a short drive from the Canadian border, making it close enough for a spontaneous getaway for a few days. With a thriving downtown district boasting great culinary establishments and vibrant nightlife, the city pleasantly surprised me.
Coffee Culture in Downtown Fargo
The first thing I seek out when visiting a new city or town is the spot where locals gather to enjoy their morning coffee. I found a great little place in downtown Fargo called Atomic Coffee. It’s a locally owned establishment that features organic and fair-trade beverages along with delicious food. It’s also a wine bar later in the day with some great small plates to enjoy. I found it to be a super-friendly place and particularly enjoy the fantastic pieces of work from local artists on the walls.
Shopping in Downtown Fargo
I was excited to find so many unique little boutiques and shops along Broadway. A very cool and eclectic shop is Fowlers Heritage Company. I was amazed by all of the fantastic pieces, with current and chic fashions. I was shopping for gifts and an outfit to wear for the evening, and I found much more than I had planned on.
Another great shop to check out is Pinch & Pour – it’s connected to Fowler’s Heritage Company, sharing the main floor of a building. It’s the perfect place for the cook or foodie in your family to shop and get inspired. I sampled some amazing vinegars in flavors I had never even thought of – they were delicious.

Corks & Canvas Art and Wine Walk
The Corks & Canvas Art and Wine Walk was such a great event, and it really showcased the enthusiasm of the local community. A perfect opportunity for an early evening stroll on Broadway, the walk features some excellent art galleries and talented local artists. My favorite space was Ecce Art + Yoga – it reminded me a lot of galleries in New York City. Complimentary wine and small bites are served at many of the venues, making it a very festive event.

Vibrant Culinary and Cocktail Scene
Whether you are seeking high-end mixology or a cool local bar, Fargo has it all. It was fun checking out the local watering holes along Broadway, then heading over to one of the more trendy venues. A favorite place of note is Vinyl Taco, where the hand-crafted margaritas have a unique twist – they’re infused with fresh rosemary and muddled lime juice. At this spot known for its authentic Mexican street food, the small plates were yummy and the tacos delicious. With great music spinning on turntables at the bar, this spot certainly has a vibe all its own.
Also be sure to visit Mezzaluna, which is cleverly tucked just off Broadway in downtown Fargo. Located behind the historic Fargo Theatre, this fantastic hidden gem is located in lofts built in 1917. It’s a foodie favorite for casual and fine dining, and be sure to check out their serious mixology menu as well.
I would absolutely visit Fargo again. This small American city offers a variety of venues to enjoy, great food and music, and the kind-natured hospitality known throughout the Great Plains. On a completely different note, for those who love the movie Fargo, be sure to visit the Visitors Center to see the actual woodchopper from the movie. They certainly have a sense of humor in this city!
