The 2017 Royal Horticulture Society’s Hampton Court Palace Flower Show had people stopping to smell more than just the roses.
The annual summer tradition is for gardening enthusiasts and aspiring green thumbs alike to enjoy landscaping techniques from all over the world. Each year, about 130,000 people attend the world’s largest flower show, which includes World Gardens, Show Gardens, the Rose Marquee, Floral Marquee, plant pavilions as well as talks, demonstrations and exhibits. The event brought three unique U.S. regions to life in the “Great Gardens of the USA”: The Charleston Garden, The Beaches of Fort Myers & Sanibel (Florida) and The Oregon Garden. Though a part of the same country, the three gardens showed the varied vegetation of each region.
Great Gardens of the USA
The Charleston Garden incorporates many Southern gardening traditions like a wrought iron garden gate and fence, and a simple water feature. Visitors can immerse themselves as they walk along the bluestone pathways. A selection of lush, sub-tropical plants in a range of greens and varying foliage textures are on display with pops of color.
Though Florida is technically in the U.S. South, the Beaches of Fort Myers & Sanibel Garden bring to life a very different display. Inspired by the famous Edison and Ford Winter Estates of U.S. inventors Thomas Edison and Henry Ford, the garden features reclaimed stone and wooden trellises. Nightly the display is lit by electric lighting similar to that found in the original gardens in South Florida. Visitors’ eyes will be drawn to the front elevation of U.S. inventor Thomas Edison’s office, and in the center of the garden, a still water pool of water lily plants.
Visitors can escape to the quiet of the Pacific Northwest in the Oregon Garden Playing on the unique climates of the region, the Oregon design captures the natural beauty of the state. The display pays homage to Oregon’s wild, mountainous landscapes as well as the famous gardens of Portland, including the International Rose Test Garden and the Japanese Garden. The center of the design includes a pool to reflect the deep reds, cream and pinks of the surrounding garden. The backdrop of rocky outcrops represent mountains and pathways of crushed stone are similar to rocks found throughout the region.
