Meandering through 225 kilometers of stunning terrain, central Idaho’s Peaks to Craters Scenic Byway is a must-drive. Marvel at the state’s tallest peak, Mount Borah, and hike to ancient lava flows at Craters of the Moon National Monument & Preserve.

Another outstanding road trip, the Northwest Passage Scenic Byway, the longest official byway in the state, stretches 325 kilometers through the Bitterroot Mountains. Stop to fish, hike and gaze at sweeping vistas along part of Lewis and Clark’s path through north-central Idaho.

Old-West history meets rugged beauty in the USA’s deepest river gorge – Hells Canyon. Hike or ride horseback through its scenic trails, scope out grazing bighorn sheep and take an adrenaline-pumping whitewater rafting excursion on the Snake River.

Rent a bicycle at Lookout Pass and cruise along the picturesque biking trails of the Route of the Hiawatha. The abandoned railroad line turned multi-use trail goes through tunnels and over trestles while offering unparalleled views of the surrounding Bitterroot Mountains.

Home to over 315 kilometers of mapped passageways, the Jewel Cave National Monument is a sight to behold with seemingly endless caverns to explore. Take a guided tour through this natural maze covered in the sparkling organic crystals which give Jewel Cave its name.

Expect wild and wonderful adventures both above and below ground at Wind Cave National Park. Above, keep an eye out for bison, elk and prairie dogs while hiking. Below, wander one of the longest underground caves in the world with 250 kilometers of explorable space.
